Meet Dr. Mark
Medical School – Wayne State University
Residency – Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University
Board certified in Emergency Medicine
For as long as he can remember, Mark Smith wanted to be a doctor. He was born and raised in Jackson, where his mother was an Emergency Room nurse. “I’d always been fascinated with science, problem solving and how the human body works,” Dr. Mark said, “and I was very interested in my mother’s work.”
A high school and college athlete, Dr. Mark was first drawn to the field of orthopaedics. But, like his mother, he was personally more suited to the fast pace and unpredictable nature of the Emergency Room.
Now a specialist in Emergency Medicine, as well as a husband and the father of two young sons, Dr. Mark leads the Emergency Room team at his hometown hospital—Allegiance Health. Along with their clinical excellence, he and his team bring compassion and caring to their work every day.
What are Emergency patients telling us they’ve noticed? Most mention shorter wait times and being kept well-informed. They are also noticing a team of physicians, nurses and techs who communicate well and work efficiently together to provide excellent care. Patient satisfaction ratings for the Emergency Room have increased significantly as a result.
“This is a very hard-working team—24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” said Dr. Mark. “We respect each other’s abilities and we really care about our patients. We are all invested in this community and we are happy to be here.”
