Allegiance Believes in Being Green

At Allegiance Health our mission is to lead our community to better health and well-being at every stage of life. We believe that being green is one of the ways we can care for the people of our region. That’s why our health system is passionate about recycling and becoming increasingly conscientious about our use of a variety of resources.

Each year, Allegiance takes strides to become greener. Areas of focus include:

  • Increasing energy efficiency
  • Using water responsibly
  • Properly dispose of hazardous and pharmaceutical waste
  • Reducing natural gas and electricity consumption
  • Promoting ecologically sound farming practices through our on-site Green Market at Allegiance Health, a year-round farmers market
  • Supporting recycling and energy reduction initiatives like Smart Commute within our community

Achieving Energy Star Certification

Our Plant Engineering department has implemented numerous energy reduction measures and projects to help us achieve resource and operational effectiveness. These projects have reduced not only our natural gas, electricity and water consumption, but have qualified our health system for an Energy Star certification. Energy Star is an international standard for energy efficiency, created in 1992 by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy.

In 2012, Allegiance earned a rating of 80 (out of 100) on the EPA energy performance scale. This indicates that the facility performs better than at least 80 percent of similar buildings nationwide. Buildings carrying the Energy Star service mark generally use 20 to 30 percent less energy than is required by federal standards.

Projects that contributed towards qualifying for the Energy Star include a cooling tower upgrade, thermo wrapping pipes, lighting upgrades and the installation of higher energy efficient pumps and motors.

Collaborating for Our Community’s Good

By working together as an Allegiance team, and through our partnerships with like-minded businesses, we are contributing to our health system’s ongoing financial vitality. We are also acting as good stewards of our capital and energy resources, which will ultimately benefit the community we are proud to serve.
