Joint Replacement Testimonial
Kandie Collier: Total Knee Replacement
Kandie Collier, who lives in Erie Michigan, near Toledo, had been a nurse for 30 years, and walking the halls for so long has taken a toll on her knees. Not long after her retirement, Kandie saw a rheumatologist who told her she would need a total knee replacement.
She had many choices of where to go for surgery, but Kandie decided to come to Allegiance Health. “Two of my dearest friends had total joint replacements at Allegiance, and their results were so remarkable that I wanted to meet the 'miracle worker' who did their surgeries,” Kandie said, referring to Allan Tompkins, MD. “I had worked in an orthopaedics unit for several years, and I know a good orthopaedic surgeon when I see one.”
Kandie also knows good nurses. “I don’t hesitate to speak up if a nurse isn’t doing a good job,” she said. “But the nurses at Allegiance Health were just outstanding. My hospitalist was really thorough, too. He took the time to explain things and waited with me to see how I reacted to medications. The whole experience was smooth and streamlined.”
Kandie found it helpful to be in the Joint Camp setting, where all the patients have had similar surgeries and work together in physical therapy. “Right after surgery, you swear you can’t move the way you are asked to. And then you see other patients just like you, struggling with the same exercise. That’s when the peer pressure kicks in,” she said. “If they can do it, I can do it, too!”
A second knee replacement is in Kandie’s not-so-distant future, and there is no question of where she will have it done. “I am definitely coming back to Allegiance Health and Dr. Tompkins,” she said. “Why would I want to go anywhere else?”
