Allegiance Health Earns “A” for Patient Safety
June 11, 2012
Jackson, Mich. — Allegiance Health received a top rating of “A” on the Hospital Safety Score from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit organization that monitors hospital safety and quality. The score was calculated using publicly-available data on patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections.
“It’s The Leapfrog Group’s goal to give patients the information they need and deserve before even entering a hospital,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the hospitals that earned an ‘A’ and we look forward to the day when all hospitals in the U.S. will earn the highest scores for putting patient safety first.”
The new Leapfrog safety measure is the latest effort in a national movement to improve transparency of hospital performance data for consumers.
“Allegiance believes that highly informed patients make better health care decisions,” said Beth Smith, vice president of organizational excellence. “We support any effort that helps consumers better understand their care choices. As more quality data is made transparent to the public, Jackson residents will increasingly appreciate that their local hospital is one of the highest quality organizations in the country.”
Rigorous Standards Achieved
The Hospital Safety Score was calculated under the guidance of physicians who are national leaders in the quality arena, including physicians from Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University and the University of Michigan. More than 2,600 hospitals, representing most of the nation’s general acute care hospitals, were given a rating of A, B, C, D, or F. Allegiance Health was one of 34 Michigan hospitals and 729 national hospitals to receive the “A” rating.
“This recognition reaffirms other honors received by Allegiance in recent years,” said Mohan Kulkarni, MD, medical director of quality and safety at Allegiance. “As different independent organizations analyze the quality data, they are reaching the same conclusion – Allegiance Health is one of the safest organizations for patients anywhere. We’re very proud of that. Our patients deserve it.”
