Joint Replacement Testimonial
Marilyn Phelps: Hip Replacement
For Marilyn Phelps, severe joint pain came on suddenly. “It
felt like my knee just went out,” she said. Over the next month, there was no
improvement. “I couldn’t put pressure on my foot without pain, and using the using the stairs,
especially going downstairs, was really difficult. “
Marilyn’s husband, Larry, had both of his knees replaced by
orthopaedic surgeon Paul Kenyon, MD,
in 2000 and 2001. “The knee replacements gave him a lot of relief, so I decided
to go and see Dr. Kenyon myself,” Marilyn said. “I am glad I did.”
Because of the type of pain she was having, Marilyn expected
that she too would need a knee-replacement. Dr. Kenyon, however, said the pain
was actually caused by her hip, and he recommended hip-replacement surgery. “He
was really nice and explained what he would do and what I could expect. I felt
confident that this was the right decision,” Marilyn said.
Her surgery was performed at the Allegiance Joint Replacement Center, affectionately known as the Joint Camp. “All of the
patients had undergone either hip or knee replacements, and it was encouraging
to work together with them in group therapy sessions,” Marilyn recalled. She
also said the nursing staff was “excellent.
Marilyn was able to return home after three days. She and
Larry remain active with regular walking at the mall. “It’s nice to be able to
get around easily without pain. And the stairs are no problem for me now,” she
said.
