Thursday, December 10 designated Mid-Michigan’s “Day of Giving”

December 9, 2009

Needs in our community keep growing day by day. As our economy struggles to rebound amid budget cuts and job losses, charities that serve as a safety net continue to struggle to meet the needs.

In order to help these charity organizations, WLNS TV 6 will dedicate its resources to spreading the word about the needs. Thursday, December 10, our 3rd Annual Day of Giving, will provide mid-Michigan an opportunity to support the less fortunate in our community. Mid-Michigan Radio Group stations Q106 and 92.1 will join TV 6 in broadcasting information related to the needs of local charity organizations and the people they serve. Volunteers will accept donations at the WLNS TV 6 Studios, 2820 East Saginaw Street in Lansing, and at Allegiance Health, 205 N East Avenue in Jackson.

Agency partners include: The Capital Area United Way, The United Way of Jackson County, Eaton County United Way, Livingston County United Way, the Salvation Army in Lansing, Highfields, Child and Family Services/Angel House, Mid-Michigan Food Bank, American Red Cross – Livingston County, EV.E., St Vincent DePaul – Jackson, Greater Lansing Food Bank, Volunteers of America, Salvation Army – Jackson County, Food Bank of South Central Michigan, Catholic Charities of Jackson County, Haven House and the American Red Cross – Mid-Michigan Chapter.  Download the list of agencies and complete contact information »

WLNS will provide a phone bank staffed by volunteers and community leaders to accept donations between 10:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Dec. 10. Call (517) 484-0093 to make your contribution. You can give online at wlns.com/dayofgiving ».

WLNS and its radio partners will provide live reports from Lansing and Jackson throughout the day regarding where to drop off donations and how to call in financial pledges of support to the various charities. TV 6 will kick off the event with a ½ hour show at 10:30 a.m. in addition to providing extensive coverage throughout the day, and a one hour special from 5 - 6 p.m., highlighting the needs and encouraging viewers to give.

Now more than ever, the mid-Michigan community and its charity organizations are struggling to provide food, clothing, shelter and assistance, as well as toys and gifts for the holidays. Day of Giving is an opportunity to help the less fortunate among us.
