Governor Snyder Promotes Medicaid Expansion

Allegiance Health was honored to host Governor Rick Snyder today to promote the Healthy Michigan initiative, which would extend Medicaid coverage to more than 470,000 Michigan residents currently living without the benefit of health care coverage. These are people working in jobs that don’t typically provide health benefits.

The benefits of Healthy Michigan include a managed-care type of health coverage that would provide primary/preventive care along with incentives to manage one’s health. Healthy Michigan would improve quality of life and help control overall health care spending by providing care at the right time and in the appropriate place. Currently, Michigan residents lacking adequate coverage often rely solely on the Emergency Room for care. With access to primary care many of these residents would be able to prevent or manage chronic conditions rather than waiting for an emergent situation to seek help.

Collectively, Michigan hospitals provide more than $820 million a year in uncompensated costs. As a result, individuals and businesses pay higher health care premiums. Healthy Michigan would not only improve the health of thousands of Michigan residents, it would benefit Michigan taxpayers and our state’s job creators—small businesses.

Governor Snyder needs the support of the Michigan Senate and is asking us to do three things:
