Linda Zysk: Total Knee Replacement
Almost five years ago, Linda Zysk was running up the stairs at her home and fell. She could tell right away that something was wrong with her left knee. Linda made an appointment with orthopaedic surgeon Allan Tompkins, MD, because he had recently performed a total hip replacement on her husband.
Dr. Tompkins determined that Linda had a torn meniscus—one of the most common knee injuries. He was able to repair it with an arthroscopic procedure. Because Linda also had arthritis, Dr. Tompkins told her she would eventually need a total knee replacement.
The arthroscopic procedure helped Linda for several years, but eventually knee pain began interfering with her life. “I had seen how much Paul’s hip replacement helped him. I knew he wished he hadn’t waited so long, and I was determined not to put it off,” Linda said.
Linda had total knee replacement surgery in October, “and I danced in high heels at my granddaughter’s wedding on Thanksgiving,” she recalled. She and Dr. Tompkins credit Linda’s quick recovery to the fact that she had the surgery early, before the damage had become severe.
“I could not have had a better experience than I had at Allegiance Health—or better results,” Linda said. “The physical therapy that followed my surgery wasn’t painful at all. But the best part is that I have the most beautiful, thin scar you have ever seen. Dr. Tompkins did a fabulous job.”
Linda has returned to her active life and says “there is nothing I can’t do. I can easily kneel down, and friends told me I’d never be able to do that again.” She is so pleased with her results, in fact, that she convinced her best friend to come from the Toledo area to have her knee replacement done at Allegiance Health. “All three of us have become cheerleaders for Dr. Tompkins and the Allegiance Joint Replacement Center,” Linda said.
